Dutasteride

About Dutasteride

Dutasteride is used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a condition in which the prostate gland is enlarged but not cancerous. An enlarged prostate can cause urinary problems, such as difficulty in passing urine and a need to go to the toilet frequently. It can also cause the flow of the urine to be slower and less forceful. Dutasteride helps to shrink the prostate and relieve these symptoms.

Note:

  • Swallow capsule whole.
  • This medicine is only intended for men.
  • Women who are (or may be) pregnant or who could get pregnant must not handle the capsules.

Dutasteride is intended solely for use in men with symptoms of an enlarged prostate and should only be used if prescribed by a doctor. Dutasteride is not suitable for use in women and children. Pregnant women should not be exposed to this medicine. The active ingredient is absorbed through the skin and can affect the normal development of a baby.

It may take several months or more for you to notice an effect of this medicine. Dutasteride affects a blood test for PSA (prostate-specific antigen). Men taking dutasteride should have their prostate checked regularly.

Please read the package leaflet carefully and consult your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.

How does Dutasteride work?

The prostate, a gland located at the base of a man’s bladder, around the urethra, grows as men age. This growth is caused by producing too much of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone. As the prostate grows, it can lead to urinary problems. If left untreated, there is a risk that your urine flow will be completely blocked (acute urinary retention).

Dutasteride lowers the production of dihydrotestosterone, which helps to shrink the prostate and relieve the symptoms.

 How to take Dutasteride

Swallow the capsules whole with water. Do not chew or break open the capsule. Dutasteride can be taken with or without food.

Dutasteride is a long-term treatment. You may need to take it for three to six months or more before it begins to have an effect. Keep taking this medicine daily even if your symptoms do not seem to be improving.
