Augmentin is an antibiotic medicine used to treat a range of bacterial infections, including those affecting the airways, urinary tract, skin, soft tissues, and teeth. It contains two active ingredients: amoxicillin, which is a penicillin antibiotic that kills bacteria, and clavulanic acid, which protects amoxicillin from being broken down by certain bacteria. This combination allows Augmentin to be effective against a wide variety of bacterial infections. It is important to note that this medicine only works against bacterial infections and will not help with viral illnesses such as the common cold or flu. How well it works can vary depending on the person and the type of infection being treated.

Dosage and usage

Take Augmentin exactly as prescribed by your doctor, usually two or three times a day depending on the severity of your infection. Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water, preferably at the start of a meal to help prevent stomach upset. Always complete the full course, even if you start to feel better, to reduce the risk of reinfection and antibiotic resistance. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for your next dose—never take a double dose. If you take too much, contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately; symptoms of overdose may include stomach upset, diarrhoea, or seizures. Do not stop taking this medicine without consulting your doctor. Store Augmentin in a dry place at room temperature (below 25°C) and keep it out of the reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date on the packaging.
