Combination pill

The combination pill is the most commonly used contraceptive pill, containing two hormones: oestrogen (typically a synthetic version called ethinyl estradiol) and progestin.

Combination birth control pills are categorised into three main types:

  • Monophasic birth control pills
  • Triphasic and four-phasic birth control pills

Monophasic birth control pills

Monophasic pills contain the same amount of oestrogen and progestin in each pill throughout the pack. They are available in low-dose and high-dose options:

  • Ultra light sub-30 pill: Contains 20 mcg of oestrogen, with a lower chance of side effects due to the reduced hormone dose.
  • Light sub-50 pill: Contains 30 to 37.5 mcg of oestrogen.
Triphasic and four-phasic birth control pills

Triphasic pill packs have three different coloured pills, each with a unique hormone dose that changes across three phases. This gradual increase in progestin (and sometimes oestrogen) more closely mimics the body’s natural menstrual cycle.

Four-phasic birth control pills are a newer option, containing estradiol and dienogest, and designed to align with natural hormonal fluctuations.
