The combination pill is the most commonly used contraceptive pill, containing two hormones: oestrogen (typically a synthetic version called ethinyl estradiol) and progestin.
Monophasic pills contain the same amount of oestrogen and progestin in each pill throughout the pack. They are available in low-dose and high-dose options:
- Ultra light sub-30 pill: Contains 20 mcg of oestrogen, with a lower chance of side effects due to the reduced hormone dose.
- Light sub-50 pill: Contains 30 to 37.5 mcg of oestrogen.
