The active substance is azelaic acid. The cream and gel also contain excipients such as propylene glycol, which may cause skin irritation in sensitive people, cetostearyl alcohol and other ingredients. There are no known interactions with other medicines during external use. It can usually be combined safely with other topical medicines, provided they are not applied to the same area at the same time. If you are unsure, speak to a doctor. 

Side effects are usually most noticeable at the start of treatment and often settle on their own. 

• Very common: mild burning, itching or redness, in more than 1 in 10 users 
• Sometimes: dry skin, flaking or rash, in fewer than 1 in 10 users 
• Rare: allergic skin reactions, in fewer than 1 in 1,000 users 

Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to azelaic acid or any of the other ingredients. It should not be used on open wounds or on damaged or irritated skin. It is suitable for adults and young people from 12 years of age. Take extra care if you have very sensitive skin, as mild burning, redness or itching can occur at first. Men may notice more irritation when it is used on the beard area, and women with sensitive skin may be more likely to develop redness or flaking. If irritation continues or gets worse, speak to a doctor. It can be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but avoid applying it to the breast while breastfeeding so a baby does not come into contact with it. It does not affect driving or using machines.
