About Captopril

  • Lowers blood pressure and supports heart failure

Captopril is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), heart failure and certain kidney problems caused by diabetes. It belongs to a group of medicines called ACE inhibitors. These medicines work by relaxing your blood vessels, allowing blood to flow more easily. This can lower your blood pressure and reduce the strain on your heart.

In heart failure, it may help your heart pump more effectively. In diabetic kidney problems, it can help support kidney function. The effect may vary from person to person. Captopril is often prescribed as part of long-term treatment and may help reduce the risk of serious complications such as heart attacks or strokes.

You may notice an effect within an hour of taking a dose, but it can take several weeks before the full benefit is achieved.
