This medicine is an antibiotic used for different bacterial infections, including infections of the airways, throat, nose, ears, skin and genitals, and sometimes for Lyme disease. It only works against infections caused by bacteria and not against viruses such as a cold or flu. Results can vary from person to person. In some people it works quickly, while in others it may take longer before improvement is noticed. It is usually prescribed as a short course, often for three to five days, and is only available on prescription. It is generally well tolerated. It contains azithromycin, which slows the growth of bacteria and can help reduce symptoms such as sore throat, coughing, fever or skin rash. A practical advantage is that it usually only needs to be taken once a day for a few days. The effect often starts within a few days, although it can sometimes take longer before you feel completely better.

Dosage and usage

Take the tablets once a day at a fixed time and swallow them whole with a glass of water. You can take them with or without food. Always follow your doctor's dosing instructions and complete the full course, even if you feel better sooner, to help prevent the infection from returning or bacteria becoming less sensitive to the medicine. If you take too much, contact your doctor or pharmacist straight away. If you forget a dose, take it as soon as possible, unless it is nearly time for the next dose. Never take a double dose. Do not stop taking it without speaking to your doctor first, even if you already feel better.
