This is a long-acting insulin used to lower blood sugar levels in people with diabetes mellitus, including type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It helps your body absorb glucose (sugar) from the blood, which can reduce the chance of high blood sugar levels. It is usually given once a day at the same time as an injection under the skin. Its effect lasts for around 24 hours. Results can vary from person to person, and the effect depends on your personal situation, eating pattern and physical activity. This medicine is only available if you can provide a previously issued prescription.

Dosage and usage

Inject once a day at a fixed time, usually in the evening. Inject under the skin of your abdomen, thigh or upper arm, and use a different injection site each time. Use the prescribed amount of insulin exactly as your doctor has advised. Check your blood sugar regularly in line with your doctor’s advice. Do not use it if it looks cloudy or contains particles.

If you inject too much, this may lead to low blood sugar (hypoglycaemia). Eat something sugary straight away and contact your doctor if you develop symptoms. If you forget a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is nearly time for your next dose. Never skip a dose without medical advice. Do not stop using this medicine without speaking to your doctor, as this may disrupt your blood sugar control.
