Glimepiride is a medicine that may help lower blood sugar levels in people with type 2 diabetes. It is usually prescribed as tablets for adults whose blood sugar is not well controlled by diet, exercise and weight loss alone. It works best as part of a healthy lifestyle and may be used on its own or together with other diabetes medicines. Results can vary from person to person, and not everyone responds in the same way. This medicine helps your body produce more insulin. Insulin is a hormone that allows sugar to move from the blood into the cells. This can lower your blood sugar level and may help reduce symptoms of high blood sugar, such as feeling very thirsty and needing to urinate often. The effect is usually noticed within a few days to weeks.

Dosage and usage

Take it once a day, shortly before or during breakfast or your first main meal. Swallow the tablet whole with some water. Try to take it at the same time each day. If you need to take more than one tablet a day, follow your doctor's advice. Do not change the dose yourself. If you take too much, contact your doctor or pharmacist straight away, as too much can lower your blood sugar too much. If you forget a dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the usual time. Never take a double dose. Do not stop taking this medicine without speaking to your doctor, as your blood sugar may rise.
