Gliclazide

About Gliclazide

  • Lowers blood sugar in type 2 diabetes.
  • Helps the pancreas produce more insulin.
  • Usually taken once daily with breakfast.
  • Not suitable for type 1 diabetes.
  • May interact with other medicines.

Gliclazide is used to treat type 2 diabetes when a healthy diet and exercise alone are not enough to control your blood sugar. It helps lower blood sugar levels by stimulating the pancreas to produce more insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps move sugar from your blood into your cells, where it is used for energy. By improving blood sugar control, this medicine may help reduce the risk of diabetes-related complications, such as damage to the eyes, kidneys and nerves. The effect may vary from person to person. This treatment is not suitable for people with type 1 diabetes. It is also not suitable if you have severe liver or kidney problems, ketoacidosis, or an allergy to gliclazide or any of the ingredients. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or using other medicines, as extra care may be needed.

Dosage and usage

Take this medicine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is usually taken once a day with breakfast. Swallow the tablet whole with water and do not chew it. Try to take it at the same time each day. If you forget a dose, skip the missed dose and take the next dose at the usual time. Never take a double dose to make up for a forgotten tablet. If you take too much, your blood sugar may fall too low. Signs can include sweating, shaking, dizziness and a fast heartbeat. Take something sugary straight away, such as glucose tablets or fruit juice, and contact a doctor. Do not stop taking this medicine without speaking to your doctor, as this may lead to uncontrolled blood sugar levels.
