Estring

About Estring

  • Vaginal ring containing estradiol
  • May reduce dryness, irritation and pain during sex
  • Releases hormone locally in the vagina
  • Ring stays in place for up to 90 days
  • Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding

This vaginal ring releases the hormone estradiol. It is used to reduce symptoms such as vaginal dryness, irritation and discomfort that may occur after the menopause. It may also help with pain during sex, itching or a burning feeling in the vagina. The ring is inserted directly into the vagina and releases a small, steady amount of hormone over three months. This may help the vaginal lining recover and ease symptoms. The effect and response can vary from person to person. It is intended for women whose menopausal symptoms are mainly in the vagina. It is not intended for women who may still become pregnant and it is not a contraceptive. Because the hormone is released directly into the vagina, the amount reaching the bloodstream remains low. This may reduce the chance of side effects elsewhere in the body and can improve daily comfort and make sex more comfortable.

Dosage and usage

Insert the ring into the vagina yourself and leave it in place for 90 days. After this period, replace it with a new ring if you wish to continue treatment. The ring can stay in place during sex. If it accidentally comes out, rinse it with lukewarm water and insert it again. Because it continuously releases a fixed amount of hormone, the chance of receiving too much is small. If you have left it in for too long, replace it as soon as you remember. If you forget to replace it, do so when you remember. If you want to stop using it, remove the ring. Speak to your doctor if your symptoms return.
