Desogestrel is a contraceptive pill, also known as the mini-pill. It contains only the hormone progestogen and is used to help prevent pregnancy. Unlike combined pills, it does not contain oestrogen, which may make it suitable for women who cannot or do not want to use oestrogen. It can provide reliable protection against pregnancy when taken correctly. Please note that its effectiveness may vary if it is not taken properly. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It works by preventing ovulation. It also makes the lining of the womb less suitable for implantation of a fertilised egg and thickens the mucus in the cervix, making it harder for sperm to reach the womb. With consistent and correct use, it can provide effective protection against pregnancy.
